The first thing I put in my mouth in the morning is important for me. It sets the tone of my day. Of course my daily breakfast changes, but for the past year and a half, I've maintained a few morning rituals that I don't start my day without, mostly because they make me feel so good.
:: When you wake up, your body is dehydrated. You've been without water for hopefully eight hours. The first thing I have is a big glass of water with a spoonful of chlorella or Mattole Valley full spectrum greens. Both act as sort of "internal deodorant." Immediately eliminating morning breath, increasing energy, improving digestion, detoxing the body, and supporting the immune system. The MVN blend along with chlorella includes blue green algae, mature green papaya, organic antioxidant fruit blend, reishi and aloe. MVN blends do not contain fillers, they are packed with high quality herbs. One glass of this and it feels like you're taking a shower on the inside- rinsing out our body and getting it ready for a good day.
:: the next thing I have is Spring Dragon gynostemma tea. I drink this tea hot and cold, it has become a staple. I make a big pot, steep one tea bag and cool the rest to use a smoothie base or drink as cold ice tea. Superfood king, "Olly" introduced me to this and taking tonic herbs and for that I am forever grateful. Sometimes I alternate with Mariage Freres tea from Paris (black tea with lavender) perfect for a rainy morning when you're in the mood for a darker and more dramatic boost.
some benefits of Gynostemma deemed the "magical grass" in Asia.
Invigorating (without being overly stimulating)
Calming- promotes a sense of peace
Anti-aging (packed with antioxidants)
Supportive of the body's natural immune system
A respiratory tonic (helps support a healthy respiratory system)
A digestive aid (Gynostemma is very soothing) and helps with weight management
To this I add a scoop of Reishi and Cordycep mushrooms. The benefits of both these herbs are nearly endless and no joke. Reishi is one of the strongest immune supplements around- hailed for being highly anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, promoting respiratory strength. It has the greatest reputation of almost any herb in history. The list goes on, but I'll leave you to your own research. Cordyceps are great for kidney, lung and liver function and are known to increase athletic performance- great for endurance and restoring the body on a deep level.
Ok. I know that's a lot of info, but starting my day this way has been a huge wellness discovery. I can't believe I hadn't heard or incorporated things like Reishi into my life sooner. After a month, I noticed more balanced energy throughout the day, slight decrease in appetite, cleaner digestion and ultimately felt like my internal engine was running on a higher grade fuel.
Now for the eating bit. If I had it my way, I would drink the greens, have some tea and then wait an hour to eat- but work and life don't go at this speed. My breakie menu varies between Ezekiel sprouted raisin english muffin with farmer market country butter, toasted! A smoothie with a frozen banana, cinnamon, cold gynostemma tea and Mattole Valley goat protein. Or especially if its the weekend- something savory or egg-y. Just depends where I am and how I'm feeling- no rules except a bit of protein is always good.
