Classical Pilates is the original method developed by Joseph Pilates in New York in the 1920s — practiced exactly as he designed it, on the same handcrafted Gratz apparatus. It is a complete system, not a fitness trend with generic programming. Joe’s method revolves around six principles: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow. He organized his method into levels or systems- Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. There are over 600 exercises and all the exercises build on each other as you progress through the system. Mastering Joe’s exercises will give you an acute mind/ body connection that results in a body that moves with ease, grace and efficiency throughout your daily life.

Every instructor at Atwill has completed a rigorous 600+ hour Romana Pilates training program. Romana Kryzanowska was a protégé of Joseph Pilates and established the most elite certification in the world. This is not the industry standard. Many studios certify instructors after a single weekend. Our trainers also attend continuing education workshops with the world’s most renowned classical teachers.

Gratz Pilates is the original manufacturer of Pilates apparatus, handcrafting equipment in Philadelphia to Joseph Pilates’s own specifications since the 1960s. Each reformer takes approximately 50 hours to build from steel, maple wood, and leather. No plastic. The engineering matters: the weight, resistance, and dimensions are designed to serve the method. Cheaper equipment produces different results. Atwill is equipped with the full Gratz line including Reformers, Cadillacs, Wunda Chairs, Barrels and more.

Start with a private session or our Intro Special — three private sessions at a reduced rate. Your instructor will assess your body, take your physical history and goals into account, and begin building a program specifically for you. Most clients feel a difference from their very first session. Prefer to jump into a class instead? You’re welcome to join our level 1 Reformer class, Wednesdays at noon.

Many clients come to us specifically for this reason. While Pilates isn’t a substitute for physical therapy , the method’s emphasis on alignment, core stability, and neuromuscular re-education has helped clients manage back pain, hip and shoulder instability, post-injury rehabilitation, and chronic tension. If you’re working with a physical therapist or doctor, we’re happy to coordinate with your medical professional to support your recovery.

Fitted, comfortable clothing that allows your instructor to see how your body is moving. Grip socks are required and if you don’t have a pair we have them for sale at the studio.

For maximum results we suggest training 2-3 times a week whether in a private, duet or group class setting. Consistency is what builds strength and body awareness over time- even one session a week will move you forward, but 2-3 helps you progress faster and stay connected to your practice.

A regular Pilates practice will completely transform the way your body moves and feels. It sculpts a body that is equally strong and flexible, while improving your circulation, balance and posture. The result: a physique that’s elongated and toned, with an enhanced mind-body connection that carries into everything you do.

Yes ! Classical Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise you can do while pregnant. It keeps your glutes and legs toned, helps strengthen back and overall posture while staying safe for whatever stage of pregnancy you’re in. It is also incredibly effective postpartum to regain your core and pelvic floor muscles and help your figure bounce back quickly. As always, check with your doctor before starting and let your instructor know what trimester you’re in so your program can be adapted.
